Abstract
1,216,378. Float glass manufacture. SARATOVSKY FILIAL GOSUDARSTVENNOGO NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO INSTITUTA STEKLA. "28'March,-I968, No. 1-4867/68. Heading G1M. .In a method of making float glass, the tank 3 containing the bath of molten metal 4 is provided at.its outlet end with a wall 10 the top of which is below the surface of the molten metal, the molten metal continuously overflowing the -wall .10-into a.chamber 11 where it is cleansed of impurities and subsequently recycled into the bath 4, molten glass being flowed, directly from a melting furnace on-.tothe molten metal bath. The.chamber 1 1.has an overflow shoot 12 leading into one of'two tanks 13, 14, in communication with each other by a-submerged passage 15. The impurities collect on top of the metal in tank 13 and are removed through a port '23. The molten metal flows into tank 14 and from there it is pumped into a header tank 16 from where it is fed' back into the bath at constant pressure through a pipe 19 located in the bath slightly upstream of wall 10. The pipe 19 has a plurality of orifices so located that the re. cycled metal issues out as jets -against the underside of the glass ribbon 20 formed on the molten metal surface. Graphite 25 covers the surface of the metal in tank 12 to prevent oxidation of the metal.
