Abstract
1,216,147. Gas-diffusion electrode, SOC. LES PILES WONDER. 6 Dec., 1968, No. 58188/68. Heading H1B. A gas diffusion electrode comprises a waterproof porous layer of PTFE traversed by a series of circulation passages or canals for a gas and has an active layer on both faces, the waterproof layer being rendered electrically conductive at the contact with the active layers for example by applying a conductive grid or conductive expanded metal between the layers, the electrode being arranged to have or not to have at least one gas inlet and at least one outlet, and comprises current collector means. The cathodic active layer includes Ag, Pt, Pd, Ni or active carbon alone or mixed with one of the preceding metals, and the anodic active layer includes Pt, Pd, Ni or active carbon cotaining one of these metals. The longitudinal canals may be blocked off at one end or they may form a continuous meandering channel. The electrode can be used in a fuel cell or in a zinc-air cell using an alkaline electrolyte or in a magnesium-air cell using a saline electrolyte e.g. NaCI or sea water. The electrodes can be made by applying to a mould, the base of which comprises bosses which are images of the canals, a mixture of PTFE and (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 , then a conductive grid and a layer of active material, pressure being applied after each stage. The half electrode is then removed from the mould and two such electrodes can be joined by heating to 400‹ C. while applying pressure. Alternatively each half electrode can be heated alone and then joined by gluing. A whole electrode may be formed by applying in succession to a flat mould a layer of active material, a conductive grid, a layer of (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 and PTFE, placing a comb of polished unoxidizable metal on the layer of PTFE, the teeth defining the canals, then applying another layer of PTFE and (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 , a conductive grid, an active layer, and then heating to 400‹ C., and then finally removing the comb.
