Abstract
1,215,982. Gas liquefaction apparatus; refrigerating. PHILIP'S GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, N.V. 9 Jan., 1968 [12 Jan., 1967], No. 1255/68. Headings F4F and F4P. Liquefaction of a low boiling gas e.g. hydrogen or helium is effected by passing helium gas to be liquefied from a pressurized container 31 through a line 30, a drier 29, heat exchangers 4, 10, 16, 21, 26, carbon dioxide and hydrogen absorbers 53, 55 a liquid air separator 50 and alternating air absorbers 51, 52 and thereafter expanding the helium gas at a temperature below the immersion temperature through an injector 36 and a choke 42 which deliver liquid helium through a line 43 to a collecting vessel 45; the heat exchangers 4, 10, 16, 21, 26 being in part cooled by counterflow of a portion of helium gas withdrawn at 38 from the injector outlet 37 and fed to the inlet 40 of a compressor 1 and in part cooled by helium delivered by the compressor at about the pressure of helium in line 30 through said heat exchangers 4, 10, 16, 21, 26 and also through heat exchangers 6, 12, 18, 23 in thermal contact with the expansion spaces 7, 13, 19, 24 of cold gas refrigerators 8, 14; the compressed helium cooled to and below the inversion temperature being added to the cooled helium withdrawn from the storage container 31 at a point 32 prior to entry into the injector 36 which has its suction side 47 connected to a line 46 to the gas space of the collector 45 whereof said gas space is connected to the compressor inlet 40. The outlet of the liquid helium delivery line 43 may be closed prior to removal of the vessel 45 by an end disc 84 of a vertically movable tube 83 connected at its upper end to a bellows 90, 91 responsive to atmospheric pressure or to the higher pressure at the compressor inlet 40 according to the setting of a three-way cock 93 in a line 92. During normal filling of vessel 45 the compressor inlet pressure in the bellows space 95 pushes the tube 83 together with an annular element 85 downwards against a spring 88 to hold open the end of line 43 and also the end of gas line 46 which is provided with an end piece 81 having orifices 82 which communicate with the gas space of vessel 45 through a ring of apertures 87 in the tube 83. The heat exchangers 4, 10, 16, 21, 26, impurity separators and the expanders 36, 42 are contained in a double-walled vacuum insulated reservoir 60 having a radiation screen 63, between the walls 61, 62 and thermally connected through a conducting connection 65 with a duct 9 traversed by compressed helium leaving exchanger 6. A further radiation screen 64 is connected through 66 with the inlet side of exchanger 21 whereof the inner wall 61 is kept cool. The lines 43, 46 extending between the reservoir 60 and vessel 45 is also enclosed in a vacuum casing provided with a radiation screen 67.
