Abstract

1,215,956. Preparation of duplicating master. XEROX CORP. Jan.8, 1968 [Jan.9, 1967], No.1082/68. Heading G2H. [Also in Division H1] A duplicating master is formed from a manifold set comprising a substrate (i) which may be a conductive layer e.g. (Registered Trade Mark) "Cellophane" or an insulating coated or placed on a conductive layer and in sequence overlying said substrate (ii) a coated imaging layer as described in Specification No.1,150,381 (iii) a duplicating layer bonded to layer (ii) similar in physical characteristics to layer (ii) but containing instead of the electrically photo-sensitive material a soluble dye e.g. crystal violet, methyl violet, malachite green, nigrosine, magenta and Victoria green or dye former and (iv) a receiving sheet on which the duplicating layer is coated, layer (iv) or substrate (i) being transparent to actinic radiation to which layer (ii) is sensitive. The process comprises activating layer (ii) with a solvent or swelling agent, if necessary, imagewise exposing to actinic radiation whilst applying an electric field across the manifold set and separating layers (i) and (iv). Layer (i) will have an imagewise distribution of imaging layer coated with duplicating layer and can be used as a duplicating master and layer (iv) will have an imagewise distribution of duplicating layer coated with imaging layer. The binder for the duplicating layer may be paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, petrolatum, bees wax, carnauba wax or ethyl cellulose. The duplicating layer may have a thin layer of imaging material coated thereon. The insulating layer for the substrate (i) or receiving sheet (iv) maybe polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose acetate or vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer. Specified activators are silicone oils, hydrocarbon oils, petroleum ether, halogenated hydrocarbons, amides, esters, ethers, betones and vegetable oils. Fixing is achieved by evaporating of activator solvent, heat, absorption of activator on paper overcoating or laminating of a thermoplastic sheet upon the image, or application of hardener.
