Abstract

1,215,854. Inserting expansion joint strips. D. S. BROWN CO. 15 Jan., 1968, No. 2046/68. Heading E1G. In a pedestrian-controlled wheeled machine for laterally compressing a hollow tapered elastomeric strip 86, and forcing it into a concrete expansion-joint 91', the strip 86 is drawn from a spool 87 and compressed between the opposed rims 109, Fig. 8, of power-driven canted discs 97, 98, the compressed strip 'being forced into the concrete groove by a discharge wheel 124 freely rotatable between the rims 109 on a horizontally and vertically adjustable axis 126 displaced from the disc axis. The lower portions of the canted discs 97, 98 are laterally supported by adjustable roller pairs 110, Fig. 8, and 111, Fig. 1. Pumped viscous lubricant is applied by pipes or applicator 'blocks to part only of the width of the interengaging surfaces of the strip 86 and rims 109. The strip 86 is radially located between the discs 97, 98 by fixed inner and outer arcuate guides, Fig. 7 (not shown). An engine 20 drives the discs 97, 98 through disengageable belt gearing 195, a reduction gear 22 and disconnectible chain gearing 197. The lubricant pump may also be driven through the belt gearing 195. The discharge wheel 124 may have a plain, serrated or sinuous periphery, but as shown has a thin rim 127 which projects into and frictionally grips the upper folded wall of the strip 86. Each disc 97, 98 rotates on an inclined stub axle 103 mounted on an upright 44 of a respective side frame, the side frames being connected by 'bolts and vertical hinges 32, 33 whereby the canted discs may be swung apart, Fig. 7 (not shown). The machine shown runs on rear wheels 19, caster wheels 55 and a groove engaging guide wheel 161 flanked by running rollers, and is propelled forwardly only by the rearward thrust of the strip 86. Alternatively one or more of the running wheels may be power driven e.g. to stretch the strip 86. For transport the axis 126 of the wheel 124 is raised by releasing a pedal and catch plate and the machine is tilted about its rear wheels to caster wheels 55 drop to, and are locked by blocks 66 in, a lower position. Adjacent the machine control handle, Fig. 6 (not shown) is (a) a lever (219) for shifting a jockey pulley to engage the belt drive 195; (b) a lever (76) linked to the caster-locking blocks 66; (c) a lever (173) linked to a lubricant supply valve. In a modified machine the caster-wheels are non-retractable, the front guide wheel and discharge wheels being raised for transport and (if desired) an auxiliary front wheel being lowered.
