Abstract
1,215,289. Hydrostatic transmission. D. W. EVANS and E. LARGE. 30 June, 1969, No. 32861/69. Headings F2C and F2D. An hydrostatic or pneumatic transmission for a motor vehicle comprises an accumulator E supplying pressure fluid through a line H to variable displacement swash plate wheel motors J. The accumulator E is continuously charged by a pump B driven by an electric motor or other prime mover A. The pump B draws liquid from a reservoir C through a filter and cooling unit D. A high pressure relief valve F and valves G which close when the pressure supply fails are provided in the high pressure line H. The displacement of the motors J is controlled by pedals O, P which acts through liquid columns K, L on a follow-up servomotor 11. Valves M, N in the lines K, L are manually operated to selectively supply control pressure to the front and/or the rear wheel motors J. Each wheel motor comprises a cylinder block 5 rotatable on the wheel axle 4 integral with a port plate 1. Pistons 8 axially slidable in cylinders 6 in the block 5 carry shoes 9 which bear against the swash plate 10. The angle of the swash plate 10 is adjusted by toothed engagement of the swash plate with a cylinder block 25 of the follow-up servomotor 11. A control piston 27 of the servomotor 11 is moved axially within a cylinder 31 of the cylinder block 25 by the pressure in the liquid columns K, L. The piston 27 controls the flow of high pressure liquid to the cylinder block main cylinders which slide on fixed pistons 24 to follow-up the movement of the piston 27. Wheel-spin is prevented by a valve 29 which opens on excessive angular acceleration or deceleration of the wheel to reduce the pressure in the liquid column K or L and thus the swash-plate angle.
