Abstract
1,215,134. Variable geometry aircraft. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 18 Jan., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3563/67. Headings B7G and B7W. A swing-wing aircraft having recesses 3 into which the wing 4 can be retracted has an inflatable barrier 6 extending between the fuselage and the wing when retracted to prevent airflow through the recess past the wing, the barrier comprising portions each having a barrier part 7 and normal thereto, sidewalls 6 urged together by the inflating pressure (e.g. as air cushion skirt fingers). The barrier may be above or below the wing and be inflated by the difference in pressure across the wing. Inflation may alternatively be from within the aircraft, the barriers being either above and below the wing, and/or having the open side closed. Constructions involving ties to facilitate entry of the wing into the recess are also described.
