Abstract

1,214,773. Cationic polyurethane coatings. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 18 April, 1969 [3 May, 1968], No. 19935/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as leather or synthetic leather are coated by doctor blade application, spraying, pouring or printing with an aqueous dispersion of a cationic polyurethane and a hardener which comprises an aqueous solution of either a methylol melamine or etherified methylol melamine having an average of 3 methylol or methylol alkyl ether groups, the polyurethane hardener ratio being between 4:1 to 1:1 by wt. The polyurethane is hardened under acidic conditions and the coating may be dried at 80-160‹C. The polyurethane dispersion may contain 30-65% wt. of solids, the particles being between 50 and 1000 mÁ in size. The cationic polyurethane may contain 0.1-1.5% quaternary ammonium groups. The hardener may be tri-, tetra-, penta- or hexamethylol melamine or mixtures thereof which may be etherified with at least 3 mols of a lower, monohydric aliphatic alcohol, such as ethanol or methanol. The acidic conditions may be produced by the addition of acids or compounds which are acid in solution and examples of both type are specified. In an embodiment, a first coating comprising 30-40 parts hardener per 100 parts of polyurethane is followed by a second coating comprising 40-60 parts of hardener per 100 parts of polyurethane. The coatings may be finished by ironing, pressing, rolling or embossing.
