An automatic feed weigher comprises a balance beam 1 on one end of which is mounted a load receptacle 2 and on the other end of which is mounted a weight pan 3 and a set of weights 4, the weigher being provided with an auxiliary weight 10 which during a coarse feeding operation of material to the load receptacle 2 is held disengaged from the beam 1 but which during a fine feeding operation is automatically engaged with the beam 1. As shown, during a coarse feeding operation material is supplied from a feed hopper 5 to the load receptacle 2 and the beam 1 tilts under the action of the set of weights to actuate a switch 11, the switch being connected to an electromagnet 12 which is energized to tilt a lever 9 so that the auxiliary weight 10 is lifted out of engagement with the beam 1. At the end of the coarse feeding operation the beam 1 tilts away from the switch 11 which then actuates an electrical circuit to close one of two hinged outlet covers 6 of the feed hopper and to cause tilting of the lever 9 whereby the auxiliary weight 10 is operatively engaged with the beam 1. At the end of the subsequent fine feed operation the beam 1 actuates a switch 15 which effects closing of the other outlet cover 6 and, through a time delay relay, the opening and closing of an outlet 16 of the load receptacle, a further weighing operation being then initiated. Associated with the beam 1 is a lever 7 having an adjustable weight 8 positioned in accordance with the amount of material in flight at cut-off.
