Abstract

1,213,339. Luminescent screens. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Oct., 1968 [7 Oct., 1967], No. 47133/68. Heading H1D. A method of manufacturing a luminescent screen for a C.R.T. comprises using a polyvinyl alcohol of average molecular wt. at least 100,000 e.g. 105,000 and preferably having a degree of hydrolysis of 88%. An excess of the luminescent suspension in a photosensitive lacquer consisting of a bichromate and polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution from a storage container 10 (Fig. 8, not shown) is dispersed on to the screen, the excess removed, the remainder dried, exposed to light in accordance with a desired pattern and the non-exposed areas of the lacquer washed away. The excess suspension is returned to the storage container via funnel (33) and the suspension therein is replenished by suspension from a further container (24). The process may be repeated to produce further patterns as in colour tubes. Viscosities and specific gravities of the suspensions as a function of time are considered (Fig. 9, not shown). The method allows a reduction in the exposure time and the recycling of the suspension maintains the viscosity of the solution within narrow limits, and also the photosensitivity, a varying exposure time not being acceptable in a continuous process.
