Abstract
1,213,291. Discharging static electricity. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd. 12 Feb., 1968 [13 Feb., 1967; 16 June, 1967], Nos. 6685/67 and 27797/67. Heading H1X. Apparatus for reducing or eliminating electrostatic charges from a chargeable surface 11 includes at least one ion generator having a point electrode 17 arranged for connection to a source of high voltage, and means for passing a stream of compressed gas past said point electrode in a direction perpendicular to or substantially perpendicular to the direction in which the point electrode extends. In the arrangement shown, compressed air admitted to a tapered duct 13 through an inlet 19 is ionized by a discharge between electrode 17 and an earthed plate 21 located in the narrowest part of the duct and passes from an outlet 22 over an aircraft windscreen 11. A water drainage outlet 20 is provided. A pair of ducts may be located on each side of the aircraft nose 12 with the electrodes 17 of a pair connected to sources of opposite polarity, or a polarity change-over switch may be provided. A polarity detector may be provided to control the voltage and/or compressed-air sources or to operate an indicator. The duct outlet 22 may be connected to a hollow wiper blade. The apparatus may be used to discharge static electricity from any metallic or insulating surface.
