Abstract

1,213,152. Joint-making packing; pipe Joints; valves. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 11 Aug., 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 37079/67. Headings F2B, F2G and F2V. Fluid sealing means comprises supporting means for a mass of visco-elastic plastics material which mass is enclosed by and completely fills a chamber formed by at least one sealed surface and the supporting means which latter allows deformation of the mass when subjected to pressure. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 and 6 for a poppet valve 70, a mass of viscoelastic plastics 90, e.g. P.T.F.E., is retained in a chamber 91 defined by a recess 79 in the valve body 75, a spring disc 85 located between the body 75 and base 73, and a spring ring 86 held in a groove 78 in the body 75. The disc 85 and ring 86 are radially spaced to provide an annulus through which, when the valve is closed, a lobe 83 on the valve seat 82 projects into sealing contact with the material 90 and also deforms the disc 85 and ring 86 thereby pressurizing the material 90. In a further embodiment, Figs. 1 and 8, for a pipe joint 109, a gasket comprising plastics material 126 located between inner and outer curved spring metal strips 140 and 150, respectively, is housed in a groove 125 in one, 110, of the mating pipe end discs 110 and 112. When the joint is tightened by nuts 133, the strips 140 and 150 are resiliently deformed, Fig. 9 (not shown), and the material 126 is pressurized between them and the discs 110, 112. In a, still further embodiment, Fig. 11, sealing means between discs 170 and 172 comprises a U-section spring metal ring having one arm 176 in a groove 171 in one disc 170 and its other arm 177 in a groove 173 in the . other disc 172, visco-elastic plastics material 184 and 185 filling chambers 186 and 187, respectively defined by arm 176 and groove 171 and by arm 177 and groove 173. The lip portions 180 and 181 o'f arms 176 and 177 are separated by a spacer ring 195. The plastics material may be P.T.F.E., polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or polyvinyl fluoride. Specification 1,213,153 is referred to.
