Abstract

1,212,396. Reinforced ceramics. GENERAL TECHNOLOGIES CORP. 13 Feb., 1968, No. 7008/68. Heading C1J. [Also in Divisions B8, C3 and D1] A high shear-strength body comprises a ceramic or refractory matrix 10, parallel spaced primary reinforcement fibres 20, and secondary reinforcement fibres 40 in the form of singlecrystal whiskers. Fibres 20 have a diameter# 3 times that of 40. Fibres 40 may be prepared as described in Specification 1,203,342; they may be regularly or randomly disposed; or, as shown in Fig. 2, they may have a geometrical structure such that the interlaminar shearstrength of the composite is improved. Fibres 20 may be: B, graphite, Si, Be, SiC, Si nitride, Al 2 0 3 , A1N, Al carbide, Al diboride, B carbide, BN, B silicide, W carbide, Ti diboride, Ti nitride, BeO, Be boride, or glass; the fibres may be amorphous or polycrystalline or single crystals, and may be elongated or continuous, or short-length and discontinuous. Fibres 20 may have coating 30, e.g. of inorganic or organometallic materials or metals. Fibres 20 may have diameter 3-100 Ám. Whiskers 40 may be of x-Al 2 O 3 with or of the same composition as fibres 20, and may have diameter 0À1-30 Ám and length 30-6000 Ám, with length: diameter ratio of from 10:1 to 200:1. Matrix 10 may be one of the ceramic or refractory materials listed for the fibres. Particles of matrix 10 may be coated with coating 30. The body may be made by winding fibres 20 on a mandrel, and applying thereover matrix material containing whiskers 40. The body may have cross-section of 2 mil or less; it may be moulded round and retain micrometallic inserts in electronic applications.
