Abstract

1,212,244. Clamps. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 5 April, 1968 [8 April, 1967], No. 16542/68. Heading E2B. An electrical domestic apparatus comprises a housing 3 provided with a clamping device which is operable to prevent longitudinal movement in only one direction of an electric cord or a flexible electric cable 1 and is readily releasable, the clamping device comprising two jaws 6, 11 which are located on opposite sides of the cord or cable and are rotatable about a respective fixed rotational axis, a transmission which couples the jaws to each other in such a manner as to cause the jaws to rotate simultaneously but in opposite senses about their respective rotational axes, only one resilient member 17 adapted to close the jaws, and means 20 for releasing the jaws wherein the line joining the centres of rotation of the jaws is at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the cord or cable between the jaws and wherein the jaws are provided with rounded noses 5, 14. In the construction shown the transmission consists of a wheel segment 8, 12 secured to each jaw the segments having teeth 9, 13 which co-operate. The means for releasing the jaws is an arm 20 which extends from the jaw 11 and passes through a slot 18 in the housing 3, the arm 20 abutting a boundary wall 19 of the slot to limit its movement. In modifications the tension spring 17 can be replaced by a compression spring or by a buffer made of an elastomeric material and the movement of the arm 20 can be limited by a stop disposed in the housing instead of by the boundary 19 of the slot. The electric cord or cable after passing through the clamp passes round a roller 4 to a reel having an automatic winding device.
