Abstract

1,212,222. Centrifugal separators; removing floating impurities. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 30 Jan., 1969 [23 Jan, 1968], No. 3467/68. Headings B1D and B2P. A floating liquid or solid is separated from the supporting liquid on which it floats by causing the mixture of supporting liquid and floating liquid or solid to rotate so that the surface of the supporting liquids assumes an inclination towards the centre of rotation towards which the floating liquid or solid drains and from whence it is collected. The apparatus shown may be used for separating and collecting small samples of oil slicks floating on the sea. A tube 1 having a closed upper end provided with an air hole 5 has its lower open end surrounded by a tube 2 whose lower end is closed and whose upper end is open and situated a short distance below the surface of the liquid. The tubes are mounted within a casing 7 on a shaft 3 which carries a stirrer 6 and is driven by a motor 4. The casing is fitted with a buoyancy chamber 8 and weighted baffles 9. One or more deflectors (10), Fig. 2 (not shown) may be provided inside the casing to deflect the rotating liquid towards the centre of the casing. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the baffles 9 are dispensed with and the upper part of the casing adjacent the surface of the liquid is divided into rotor segments which react with the rotating liquid to produce some counter-rotation of the casing to assist in gathering oil into the casing. In operation, as the stirrer is rotated a vortex is formed within the casing. Oil on the surface of the liquid is carried inwards and downwards into the tube 2 and then upwards into the tube 1 where it is trapped. The oil may be removed continuously from within the tube 1 by means of an archimedean screw pump arranged along the axis of rotation. A number of stirrers may be mounted on the shaft 3.
