[Also in Division H4] A multi-range echo sounder has means for changing the range automatically in dependence on the count of digital pulses representing the measured depth. If the count lies above a preset maximum or below a preset minimum, as determined in a comparator, the range is increased, or decreased respectively, provided that the present range is not the maximum or minimum. The signal from the comparator passes via a normally open gate which is then inhibited for sufficiently long that a fresh count can be made on the new range. The preset maximum and minimum counts overlap to prevent hunting between ranges.
