Apparatus for distributing and gluing wrappers, particularly in a cigarette-packaging machine, comprises a hopper, a member for removing wrappers individually from the hopper by means of a suction circuit, a roller immersed in a glue tank and capable of transferring glue to a member which then applies glue to a wrapper, and means for automatically causing a break in the supply of wrappers and correspondingly separating the roller from the glue-applying member when no article to be wrapped will be present at a subsequent station. Transport of wrappers.-A pile of wrappers (not shown) is positioned on a movable base 27 in hopper 11, Fig. 3, which is adjustable in size and which is provided with a microswitch 22, 22a which operates a signal when the pile approaches exhaustion. At the beginning of a cycle, a suction gripper sector wheel 37 is positioned at the left end of a slot 24, as shown in dash-dot lines in Fig. 3. In this position, the open end 39b of a suction passage in spoke 39 in wheel 37 is in contact with the bottom of the pile of wrappers. Translation and anti-clockwise rotation of wheel 37 along slot 24 is now begun, and simultaneously a cam 51 is rotated on a shaft 10 causing a valve sleeve 74 to slide in its seat 75, thus allowing communication between pipes 70 and 71, and transmitting suction to spoke 39 by way of pipes 68, 69, 70, 71 and 73. The lowest wrapper is thus held by suction against the surface 38 of wheel 37 and is moved to the right until the further end of slot 24 is approached. At this stage, the cam 51 again operates valve 74 and cuts off the connection to the suction source via pipe 68. The wrapper is now lying on the surface of a roller 50, which rotates clockwise, passing the wrapper beneath further smaller rollers and finally delivering the wrapper into a slit between two plate guides (129, 130), Fig. 4 (not shown). The wrapper is made to descend this slit. by driven rollers. Gluing wrappers.-A pick-up roller (105), Fig. 4 (not shown), dips into a glue tank (106) and transfers glue on to rotating sectors, orientated so that they come into contact with predetermined areas of each wrapper as it passes over a revolving counter-roller. The glued wrapper now descends between guides on its way to a wrapping station (not shown). Automatic control.-If a gap occurs in a succession of articles to be packaged, a sensing and memorizing unit (not detailed or shown) sends a signal at the appropriate time to two electromagnets. Energizing a first magnet 80 causes a tooth 81 to engage a notch 82 in sleeve 74, thus maintaining the suction valve closed so that no wrapper is removed from the hopper 11. Further, glue is not applied to the rotating sectors since a second magnet causes the glue tank (106) and roller (105) to move away.
