Abstract

1,211,342. Radio reflectors. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 5 Jan., 1967 [28 Oct., 1965], No. 45765/65. Heading H4A. In a passive radio communication satellite, alternate lengths of the filaments of a net structure are metal coated to form dipoles. The metal may be aluminium or silver and the net may be either a polyamide, polyester or glass fibre. To protect the net from ultra-violet radiation it is coated, between the dipoles, with metal to a depth smaller than that at the dipoles; radio wave reflection at these lengths is negligible. The net is unfolded in space by the pressure of solar radiation in the gravitational gradient of the Earth, which causes different parts of the net to have different orbital periods.
