Abstract

1,211,284. Blind fasteners. VSI CORP. 21 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 55193/68. Heading F2H. In a blind fastening device comprising a bolt 14, an expansible sleeve 12 and a nut 10, the nut 10 is provided with a head 15 at one end, a conical nose portion 20 at the other end and an intermediate portion 18 which convergingly tapers from the head 15 to the nose portion 20. In use, the sleeve 12 is mounted on the shank 32 of the bolt 14 and the nut 10 is threaded on to the bolt to form an assembly which is inserted from one side of two panels (52, 54), (Fig. 3, not shown) into aligned tapered bores of the panels which are to be secured together. With the nut head 15 positioned on one side and the bolt head 30 and sleeve 12 positioned on the other side of the panels a tool is arranged to engage recess 16 in the nut head 15 and hold the nut stationary in the panels and to grip flats 40 of a break-off portion 36 of the bolt for rotation thereof. As the bolt is tightened relative to the nut, the sleeve 12 is expanded by the nose portion 20 so that the panels become clamped between the sleeve 12 and the head 15 of the nut. At a pre-determined tension, the break-off portion 36 severs from the rest of the bolt 14 so that overtightening is prevented.
