Abstract

1,210,900. Spinel powder. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 18 March, 1969 [28 March, 1968], No. 14101/69. Heading C1A. Spinel powder is prepared by coprecipitating at a pH between 9À5 and 10, aluminium and magnesium from a hot aqueous solution containing aluminium and magnesium ions in the gram ratio of 2: 1 and firing the precipitate at a temperature between 400‹ and 1400‹ C. in order to totally convert the precipitate to a crystalline powder of spinel. In one embodiment a hot solution of aluminium and magnesium chloride is added to a buffered alkaline solution, containing preferably ammonium hydroxide and chloride, the pH of the latter being maintained by the addition of more alkaline solution. Alternatively an alkaline solution containing ammonium hydroxide is added to a solution containing aluminium, and magnesium ions and also an amount of oxalate ions equivalent to the amount of magnesium ions, in order to bring the pH of the latter solution to between 9À5 and 10. In the second case firing at 750-1400‹ C. is preferred and in both cases 800-1200‹ C. is most preferred.
