Abstract

1,210,899. Coiling. FORT WAYNE TOOL & DIE Inc. 11 March, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 12708/69. Heading B3E. Apparatus for winding coils upon a coil form 52 having a plurality of steps of progressively smaller size comprises a cylinder 48 which is actuated to move a block 30 together with a splined shaft 33 and flyer 34 outwardly to its extreme forward position, so that the flyer 34 is positioned for winding the largest coil step on the coil form 52 with a latch 73 engaging an abutment 68 to retain the block 30 in that position. The actuation of the cylinder 48 is then reversed to bias the block 30 rearwardly. A carrier 27, along with block 30, splined shaft 33 and flyer 34 is oscillated by means of a slide member 83 mounted for longitudinal movement on frame 21 by means of guides 84 and 85. A cam 86 co-operates with a cam follower roller 89 mounted on the slide 83 so that on rotation of cam 86 a reciprocatory motion is provided to the slide 83. The flyer 34 is initially positioned at the same relative part, e.g. 107 with respect to each of the coil form steps at the beginning of the winding of the respective coils by retracting rod 109 of cylinder 108. This retraction moves slide 83 so that the cam follower 89 becomes disengaged with the cam 86 thus actuating a lever member 93 to move the carrier to its extreme right hand position so as to position the flyer 34 adjacent the outer edges of the respective coil form step. During normal operation, cylinder 108 is actuated to extend its piston-rod 109 so as to maintain the cam follower roller 89 in engagement with cam 86. When the requisite number of turns have been wound on the largest step, cylinder 75 is actuated to pivot latch 73 away from abutment 68 so as to allow the cylinder 48 to move the block 30 together with the spined shaft 33 and flyer 34 rearwardly until abutment 69 engages latch 74. Thus the flyer is positioned for winding the requisite number of turns on the next largest step. Cylinder 78 is then actuated to allow block 30 to be moved until latch 73 engages abutment 70 so as to position the flyer for winding a coil on the next step of the coil form. In this embodiment the two largest steps are axially wider than the two smallest steps so the throw of the slide 27 is lessened by retracting rod 103 of cylinder 102 so as to move member 99 and lever 93 upwardly thereby effectively changing the pivot part of the lever 93. After the requisite number of turns have been wound on the third step, the cylinder 75 is again actuated to release latch 73 and the block 30 is then moved by the cylinder 48 until the latch engages abutment 71. Limit switches 80 and 82 are provided for sensing proper locations of the block 30 together with the splined shaft 33 and flyer 34 at the extreme outer and inner positions.
