Abstract

1,171,575. Winding strip on edge. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 23 Feb., 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 8886/68. Heading B3E. [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for edgewise winding a strip on to a tube to form a finned heat exchanger tube comprises means to rotate and translate the tube and a revolvable circumferential array of axially movable gripping members for moving the strip around a helical path to continuously surround and abut the tube, the gripping members being actuated into and out of their operative positions by cam means. The tube is rotated and translated through a headstock, Fig. 3, by a movable tailstock. A continuous strip 8 e.g. copper is helically wound on to the tube by moving it around a guide 32 of a shoe 6 by engaging pins 18 non- rotatably mounted in circumferentially arranged holes in a rotatable member 14. The back ends of the pins 18 engage a fixed cam surface 24, in a frame 4, so that as the member 14 rotates each pin 18 as it passes a point 28a, is moved forward about 0À004 inch to engage, with its tip 20, the strip 8 and move it around the guide 32. At point 26a the cam surface 24 recedes and the pin 18 is pushed back, to disengage the strip 8, by a projection 34.
