Abstract

1,210,698. Golf balls and compositions. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 27 Feb., 1969 [1 March, 1968], No. 10001/68. Heading A6D. [Also in Division C3] The curing of a golf ball cover made of composition comprising an ethylene-unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer of such a copolymer in which some of the carboxylic groups have 'been converted to metal salts is effected by making and shaping the composition to the form of a cover without the inclusion of any curing agent, contacting the cover with a peroxy curing agent in liquid or vapour form, allowing it to diffuse into the cover and heating the cover to cure it. In a modification the uncured cover is fitted around a golf ball core and then pressed and heated to mould the cover around the core and cure the cover. Specified curing agents are di-t-butyl or amyl peroxide, t-butyl penbenzoate, t-butyl peroxy isopropyl carbonate and t-butyl cumyl peroxide. The exemplified terpolymer is ethylenemethacrylic acid-sodium methacrylate. The compositions may also contain cis-polybutadiene, lead carbonate and TiO 2 . A composition suitable for a core comprising cis-polybutadiene, trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, silica, TiO 2 , lead carbonate and dicumyl peroxide is also described.
