Abstract

121,062. Claes, J. April 8, 1918. Mixing liquids in definite proportions. - Relates to apparatus for mixing and feeding or circulating lubricants or other liquids and for maintaining the ingredients of the mixture in predetermined proportions. Oil from one or more casks 1, Fig. 1, and water from a small tank 2 are drawn through a pump 3 and passed into one or more conduits 4 arranged beneath the machines in which the lubricant is to be used The mixture passes into a tank 5 containing water, the supply of which is regulated by a float valve 6, and the lubricant is pumped from the mixing-tank 5 to a distributing - tank 8, from which overhead pipes 9 lead to the machines. Some of the liquid from the tank 8 passes into an hydrometer consisting of a pipe 10, Fig. 2, containing a glass tube or float 15 charged with mercury. The liquid enters at a small inlet 11 at the lower end of the tube 10 and escapes by a larger outlet near the upper end, whence it passes by a pipe 14 to the tank 5. When the density of the mixture is reduced, the float 15 sinks and, by means of a lever 17, raises a fork 19 out of two mercury cups 20, thereby breaking an electric circuit 29 containing the starting and stopping mechanism of the pump 3. If the predetermined proportion of water is exceeded, the float 15 rises, owing to the increased density of the mixture, and the pump 3 is re-started. To prevent any variation of pressure of the lubricant from affecting the float 15, the liquid passes through a pressure-regulator 21, Fig. 5, before entering the tube 10. A gallery 22 round the upper end of the receptacle 21 is divided into concentric compartments 24, 25, 27, and the liquid passes down the central tube 23 into the receptacle 21 and overflows into the compartments 24, 25, 27 in turn. The smallest compartment 25 communicates by a pipe 26 with the inlet 11 of the tube 10, and the outermost compartment 27 communicates by a pipe 28 with the tank 5. When the main pumps are stopped, the hydrometer at once sinks and lifts the fork 19 out of the cups 20.
