Reducing compositions used in dyeing and printing with vat or sulphur dyes comprise a hydrosulphite compound and at least one hydroxysulphonic compound of general formula: in which R1 and R2 are each a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic or cyclic radical or taken together represent a cyclic radical, the chains or rings of which may contain other >C(OH)SO3Me groups, and Me is a hydrogen atom or a monovalent metal, preferably sodium or potassium. Textiles e.g. cotton or viscose may be printed with a vat dye paste and then foularded with an aqueous liquor contairiing the above compositions followed by steaming or pressure dyed with the vat dye and reducing compositions at e.g. 100-130‹C. Hydroxysulphuric acid compounds specified are sodium 1-hydroxy-ethanesulphonate, sodium 1-hydroxy 1-methyl-ethanesulphonate, sodium 1-hydroxy-1-methyl-propanesulphonate, sodium hydroxymethanesulphonate
