Abstract

1,210,513. Moulding foamed plastics; foamed plastics laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 March, 1968 [5 April, 1967], No. 15687/67. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division C3] Foamed synthetic plastics articles, optionally provided with a facing sheet on one or more surfaces are made from a foam precursor or foaming material by introducing the material into an orifice defined by downwardly moving conveyers; the length and speed of the conveyers being such that the material is contained therein until it has foamed and consolidated. As shown foamed material 11 is supplied from a feed into an orifice defined by platens 10 which may be heated and endless belts 13. A film 14 covers the belts 13 and becomes integrally bonded to the foamed material. The foamed resin may be a polyurethane or a condensation product of formaldehyde and a phenol or an amine such as urea, thiourea, guanidine or melamine and is preferably cured after it has left the moulding enclosure. The facing sheet may comprise a flexible material e.g. films of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, vinyl chloride, paper, plastic-coated paper or metal foil or it may comprise a rigid sheet material such as plywood, asbestos sheets, plasterboard or metal or plastics material in thick sheets. Reinforcing members e.g. wires, rods or wire mesh may be fed between the conveyers as the synthetic plastics material is introduced. If a flexible facing sheet is used or the foam has no facing sheet, the conveyers may be constrained to move from their initial downward path into a horizontal or slightly upwards path.
