Abstract
1,210,367. Alkylbenzenes. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 7 July, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 34215/69. Heading C5E. Alkylbenzenes are prepared by partially chlorinating C 9 -C 15 linear paraffins; alkylating benzene, present in excess, with the chlorinated paraffins in the presence of a catalyst; separating the catalyst from the reaction mixture, fractionating the mixture to recover unreacted benzene and paraffins, and alkylbenzenes as product; purifying the unreacted paraffins by contact with conc H 2 SO 4 , oleum or SO 3 ; and recycling the purified paraffins to the chlorination step. The purification may be carried out at 20-120‹ C. using 0À5-10 parts of acid per 100 parts by wt. of paraffins. The paraffins may be then percolated on activated clay, e.g. attapulgite, to remove any acid residue.
