Abstract

1,210,323. Safety harness. SIGMATEX A.G. 11 Nov., 1968 [22 June, 1968], No. 53224/68. Heading A3V. A vehicle safety belt 8 is wound on a reel 1 driven through a self-locking transmission 4, 5 by a reversible motor 7. The latter may be clockwork, hydraulic or pneumatic but is preferably an electric motor controlled by the tension in the belt. This motor drives the reel through an electromagnetic clutch and a self-locking worm 5 meshing with a worm wheel 4. The belt 8 passes from the reel through a tension-responsive means 9 having guide rollers 20, 21 and a feeler arm 12 biased downwardly in slot 11 by a spring 13. A pull on the belt in direction 22 causes the belt loop passing under feeler arm 12 to raise the latter and operate a switch 17 which actuates motor 7 to pay out the belt. When the latter becomes slack, spring 13 biases the arm 12 to operate a switch 15 which causes the motor to wind in the belt until the arm 12 occupies an intermediate position where the motor is stopped and the reel is locked by the worm 5. When the belt is fully retracted, a feeler arm 25 riding on the wound belt opens a switch 26 to de-energize the electromagnetic clutch. This permits a quick withdrawal of the belt for strapping it on. Alternatively the motor 7 may be driven initially at high speed but when the buckle of the belt has been closed, a resistance is inserted in the motor supply to reduce the speed. An electric switch associated with a time delay may be provided in the backrest of the vehicle seat to delay retraction of the belt. In other embodiments, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the re-wind switch 15 is actuated by the brake pedal or by means (34) responsive to acceleration or retardation of the vehicle.
