Abstract

1,210,239. Foundry moulding composition containing a Novolak and resole resin. BORDEN CHEMICAL CO. (U.K.) Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [3 Nov., 1967], No. 50199/67. Heading C3N. A foundry moulding composition comprises a granular refractory material, the particles of which are coated with a composition which has a pH less than 5.5 (measured in I.M.S.), is substantially nitrogen-free and comprises a Novolak and a resole. The Novolak may be prepared from phenol, m-cresol, 3,5-xylenol or resorcinol and 0À5-0À88 moles per mole of phenol, of aqueous formaldehyde solution in the presence of HC1, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 or (COOH) 2 as catalyst. The resole may be prepared from phenol m-cresol or 3,5-xylenol and 1À6-2À8 moles per mole of phenol of aqueous formaldehyde solution in the presence of NaOH or Ca(OH) 2 as catalyst. In examples, a stainless steel reactor is used for this step. The refractory material may be silica sand, quartz, olivine or zirconia. In one procedure the Novolak and resole are added to heated refractory material and mixing is continued until the refractory material is cool, 1-2% of water optionally being added to accelerate cooling. In an alternative procedure the Novolak, containing acid curing catalyst, and the resole are added to separate batches of sand which are subsequently mixed. The moulding composition may also include a wax, mill scale and rosin, and a material such as Ca 2 SiO 4 , silica gel, CaSO 4 or CuSO 4 to absorb water during storage. The pH adjuster may be salicylic acid.
