Abstract

1,209,937. Visible signalling apparatus; road signals for controlling traffic. D. L. P. HAMILTON. 15 Nov., 1967 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 51942/67. Headings G4F and G4Q. [Also in Divisions E1 and F4] A roadway barricade comprises a pair of hinged frame sections 9, each having a transversely extending panel 10 and a signal unit comprising a box 14 adapted to contain a battery, a light housing 13 and control means in the box, the box 14 being secured to the panel 10 of one of the frame sections so that the box is between the panels 10 and protected thereby and the spacing between the panels when the barricade is in its closed position is sufficient to accommodate the box 14. The housing 13 may be in the form of a flasher head mounted by a stud 18 and yieldably resilient grommet 40, 42, e.g. of rubber, in an aperture 39 in the box 14 so as to allow the flasher housing a degree of movement. The top wall 22 of the box may be sloping (Fig. 4), so that the lamp housing 13 is at an angle to the box sides 28, 29 but is in an erect position when the box is fitted to one of the plywood sides 10 of a mounted roadway barricade 6. In a modified arrangement (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), the box 14 has a removable top (22<SP>1</SP>) which has a carrier (53) for the control devices and enables access to the battery 15. The stud 18 of the lamp housing 13 may be fitted into an angled connector (35) welded to the flat top of the box. The grommet 40 enables the lamp housing 13 to be rotated to any position and gives protection against breakage, e.g. if the barricade is knocked over. The box is secured to the barricade by a hook 32 and screw 33. The back 29 (Fig. 4) of the box may be removable to enable the battery 15 to be changed and to provide access to the control arrangement (16, Fig. 5, not shown). The control arrangement is energized by a manual switch (21) or a light-sensitive cell 20 positioned at the top of the box. Rivets 11 or nuts and bolts (60, Figs. 10 and 11, not shown), may be used to hinge the legs 8 of the barricade and flanges 12 (64) may be provided to limit the open position of the legs.
