Abstract

1,209,899. Liquid level indication. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 19, 1967 [Jan. 16, 1967], No. 2312/67. Heading G1H. In a liquid level indicator a tube 10, arranged to be inserted in a vehicle sump dipstick hole, is provided at the lower end with an aperture 14, arranged at the required liquid level, and at the upper end with a valve seat 21, formed on a member 19 coupling the tube 10 to a tube 17 leading to an adaptor 26 on a manually operated vacuum pump and the arrangement is such that a knob 30, on being pulled, moves a piston 31, against a spring 33, to create a vacuum in the tube 10, so that if the oil is above the aperture 14 a float 15 is lifted to engage the seal 21 and further outward movement of the knob 30 compresses the spring 33 and exposes a green coloured sleeve 29 to indicate that oil is at the required level if, however, the oil is below the aperture 14 the float 15 is not lifted and the piston 31 continues to be moved outwards to engage pins 38 on a red coloured annulus 35 which is moved to an exposed position indicating that the oil is below the required level.
