Abstract

1,209,495. 2-Substiiuted polycyclic hydrocarbons. ASHLAND OIL & REFINING CO. 31 Oct., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966], No. 49523/67. Heading C5E. The products obtained by reacting polycyclic compounds with a normally gaseous olefin are subjected to isomerization and/or disproportionation in the presence of anhydrous AlCl 3 at a temperature not exceeding 125‹ F. to increase the content of the 2-isomer(s). As described, with the aid of a flow-sheet, mono- and dialkylates may be treated either separately or together, and if the mono-alkylate is the desired product the di-alkylate may be disproportionated with unsubstituted polycyclic compound. Polycyclic compounds mentioned are naphthalene, anthracene and acenaphthene, and the process is particularly applicable to the production of 2-isopropyl naphthalene, and 2,6- and 2,7-diisopropyl naphthalenes.
