Abstract

1,209,474. Flexible pipes. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 26 Oct., 1967 [27 Oct., 1966], No. 48807/67. Heading F2P. A flexible pipe comprises a tubular core 1 of elastomeric, or thermoplastics material compressed between inner and outer layers 3, 4 each of which is of a material more rigid than the core 1. As shown, the outer layer 4 comprises a metallic wire 4 coiled under tension and having a spacing which is no more than half, and preferably less than one fifth, of the wire diameter, the inner layer 3 comprising a helical winding 3 of S-shaped profile having interlocking, and partially overlapping, convolutions. The wire 4 may be replaced by a standard cable. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the external layer (4) comprises a winding similar to winding (3). In a further modification, Fig. 3, not shown, the layers (3, 4) are formed by helical windings of metallic strips (7). The core 1 may consist of natural rubber or, for instance, of neoprene, butyl, polyurethane, or nylon, &c. The layers 3, 4 are preferably formed of the same metal or of metals having coefficients of expansion which are substantially the same, and they can be coiled to have different, and opposite pitches. The wires, strips, or strands of the layers 3, 4 may be coated with elastomeric, or thermoplastic material, or the wires &c., may be formed entirely of thermoplastic, thermosetting, or synthetic fibre material.
