Abstract

1,209,448. Carton closing apparatus. D. WAINBERG. 21 Nov., 1967, No. 52905/67. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B2] A carton of the kind having closure flaps sealed to side or end walls by adhesive, has the flaps folded down and held during adhesive setting by combined folder carriers mounted on a member rotatable in a vertical plane above conveying means for the incoming cartons. An adhesive applicator (see Division B2) glues the carton walls or flaps while they are on the conveying means. A plough may fold down a hinged carton lid on the incoming cartons. Cartons 59 are fed in continuously on a conveyer 85 and on to rails 58 over the applicator 30, the glue applying arms of which take over the forwarding of the cartons, Fig. 11 (not shown), and beneath an arm 104, Fig. 1, or wire (107), Fig. 12 (not shown), on to rails 58. A disc 33 rotates continuously and has folder carrier frames 34 pivoted on it and maintained horizontal by chain and sprocket means, Fig. 5 (not shown). Each frame descends on a carton, folding down its flaps and carrying it upwards. In some embodiments, a number of cartons is gathered by each frame, each added carton pushing the others upwards until the top one is clear of the frame and ready for ejection. In one ejecting arrangement, each frame incorporates supports 56, Figs. 1, 8, 9 on to which the uppermost carton is pulled by a bar 69 extending parallel with the disc face and mounted on an arm 66 pivoting about a fixed axis. The bar is engaged by a rising frame and moves from its rear to front side as the arm is pivoted upwards by movement of the frame. The bar thus moves the top carton on to the supports 56 before passing clear and dropping on to the following frame. The carton is picked up by part 64 of an exit shoot. In other arrangements flights on conveyer chains remove the cartons either parallel or transverse to the axis of rotation of the disc, Figs. 16, 17, 18 (not shown). In the former case, the frames hold one carton only which is removed by the conveyer as the open front of the frame passes over it. The device is adjustable for various carton sizes. Each frame may have a false end member adjustable along the side members for various carton lengths, Fig. 14 (not shown). The carton supports beneath the disc may be raisable for various carton heights, Figs. 4, 10 (not shown). A cam surface may guide each frame over part of its ascending path Fig. 13 (not shown).
