Abstract

1,209,412. Hydrostatic transmission control. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 14 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968; 22 March, 1968], No. 8131/69. Heading F2D. In a vehicle hydrostatic transmission in which the inclination of the pump swashplate 51 is adjusted manually by a rod 71 moved in opposite directions for forward and reverse, an automatic control is operative to override the manual control if the ratio selected causes engine overload or overspeed. As shown, the swashplate is moved by servomotor 58, 59 controlled by a rotary valve 17 positioned by a lever 47. The rod 71 is operative on the lever 47 through a central pin 79 fast with rod 71 and a rod 68 connected to the lever. The pin 79 is received in a cylinder portion 75 of the rod 68 and is connected thereto by a spring 92. Under normal conditions, movement of rod 78 is transmitted to rod 68 via spring 92 to rotate the spool 48 of valve 17 to adjust the swashplate. A feedback to the sleeve 49 of the valve 17 disconnects the valve from the swashplate when it reaches its selected position. In the event of engine overload as determined by the force exerted by a rod 35 connected to the engine throttle, e.g. accelerator pedal, and acting on one end of a valve spool 31, and governor pressure in line 44 from an engine-driven governor 12 acting in opposition on the spool 31, an overload signal 41 is delivered from valve 16 to either chamber 85 or 86 defined between the pin 79 and cylinder portion 75 of rod 68 to move the rod 68 relative to the rod 71 to downshift the transmission and reduce the overload. Overspeed of the engine, e.g. on downhill coasting is prevented by governor pressure 44 forcing spool 31 up to connect engine-driven pump pressure 15 through the valve 16 to the apply line 45 of vehicle brakes 46. Engine braking on overspeeding may be provided by connecting line 45 to exhaust ports 97, 98 to upshift the transmission. Again, Fig. 3 (not shown), overload line (41<SP>1</SP>) is connected to equal sized chambers (115), (116) to provide equal response times to downshift the transmission in forward and reverse. The overspeed line (45<SP>1</SP>) is connected to the respective chamber (115), (116) on overspeed to upshift the transmission.
