Abstract
1,209,237. Pyridines. WARNER-LAMBERT PHARMACEUTICAL CO. 27 Aug., 1968 [28 Aug., 1967; 5 Sept., 1967; 16 July, 1968], No. 40991/68. Addition to 1,134,163. Heading C2C. Pyridines are prepared by passing a mixture of air or oxygen and a C 3 or C 4 olefinic hydrocarbon or a mixture of such hydrocarbons in the vapour phase over an oxidation catalyst consisting of (a) Ni a Fe b Bi c P d Mo e O f in which a is 3-14, b is 1-3, c is 1-3, d is 1, e is 12 and f is 45-70; (b) Co a Fe b Bi c P d Mo e O f , in which a is 2-7, b is 1-3, c is 1-3, d is 1, e is 12 and f is 45-70; or (c) Ni a Co b Fe c Bi d P e Mo f O g , in which a is 0-12, b is 0-6, a+b is 2-14, c is 1-3, d is 1-3, e 1, f is 12 and g is 45-70; at 225- 500‹ C., introducing ammonia into the gaseous reaction mixture formed, contacting the ammonia-containing gaseous reaction mixture with a condensation catalyst at 250-600‹ C. and recovering the pyridine compounds formed. The preferred condensation catalyst is silicaalumina. Examples are given of the conversion of propylene to pyridine and 3-picoline.
