Abstract
1,208,554. Mechanical seals. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. 5 Feb., 1969 [5 Feb., 1968], No. 6219/69. Heading F2B. A shaft seal separating spaces 14 and 16 comprises two anti-friction pads 22 1 and 22 2 urged by bellows 24 1 and 24 2 into sealing contact with a plate 18 secured to the rotary shaft, a duct 26 between the pads for supplying barrier gas at the plate, and a floating ring 30 mounted for floating movement in an annular recess in the plate and projecting between the pads so as to provide flow ducts for the barrier gas being supplied through ducts 26. As shown, a floating ring 30 is disposed between individual pads 22 1 and 22 2 which seal the space 14 containing gas from the space 16 containing oil at a lower pressure. An inert barrier gas, which also serves as a cooling medium, is supplied through ducts 26 in a tubular extension 28 of a casing 12 and flows in the direction of arrow f; part of the flow passing through the clearance between the extension and the ring 22 1 and part of the flow passing through nozzles 44 and passages 46 in the floating ring 30 before passing out of the casing through chamber 36 and ducts 34. In another embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the pads (22<SP>1</SP> 1 and 22<SP>1</SP> 2 ) are incorporated in a single member and seal the spaces (14<SP>1</SP> and 16<SP>1</SP>) of greater pressure difference. The rings are urged into sealing contact by a single bellows (62) while three diaphragms (24<SP>1</SP> 1 , 52 and 24<SP>1</SP> 2 ) provided between the outer surface of the ring (22<SP>1</SP> 1 ) and the casing divide the barrier gas into different paths, the first path passing through chamber (54) and ducts (26<SP>1</SP> and 60) and the second path passing through the clearance between the floating ring (30<SP>1</SP>) and the rings (22<SP>1</SP> 1 and 22<SP>1</SP> 2 ) and through chamber (56).
