Abstract

1,208,519. Centrifugal separators. WIBAU WESTDEUTSCHE INDUSTRIE-UND-STRASSENBAU-MASCHINEN G.m.b.H. 3 Sept, 1968 [2 Sept., 1967], No. 41779/68. Heading B2P. In a vortex-flow separator for removing particles from a fluid Fig. 2 the fluid is introduced through an inlet 3 and flows in a spiral vortex 9 towards a clean fluid central outlet 5, the particles separated by centrifugal force being caught in, and caused to separate out against the peripheral wall I of the separator by, a rotating mass 10 of fluid which surrounds the vortex 9 and does not flow to the outlet 5, the rotation in the fluid mass 10 being generated by the transfer of shear stress forces from the vortex 9. An inlet 3 and an outlet 5 may be provided in only one or each of the side walls 2 of the separator. A deflector 4 serves to keep the entering fluid within a radius R. The separated particles are discharged through an outlet 6 and lock valve 7, deflectors 8 being provided to prevent fluid discharge. One or more openings 18 may be provided in only one or each side wall for the spraying in of liquid to facilitate separation. The liquid may alternatively be introduced by inwardly projecting tubes which may be provided with slits or nozzles. In a modification, Fig. 4, one or more annular chambers 11, 12 are provided adjacent the periphery of the separator to facilitate deposition of separated particles. As shown, the chambers 11, 12 communicate with the interior of the separator through annular slits 13, 14 bounded by frusto-conical plates 15, 16 and a ring 17 of triangular cross-section. The clean fluid outlets 5 communicate with exhausters 19, 21, the rotors 20, 22 of which are mounted on a common shaft 23 driven by a motor 24. Two separators may be connected in series.
