Abstract
1,208,064. Electro-photographic process. RANK XEROX Ltd. Jan.26, 1968 [Jan.27, 1967], No. 4118/68. Heading G2H. An electrophotographic plate, comprising a supported softenable layer (e.g. of plastics) having particulate material therein or thereon, has an electrostatic charge image formed thereon and is softened by heat or solvent vapour so that the particulate material migrates to the support, and is further softened by heat and/or solvent vapour to cause agglomeration of the particulate material in non-image areas to reduce the background. If the particulate material is photo-conductive, the charge image is formed by uniform charging (e.g. with a corona discharge) and imagewise exposure, and, if non-photo conductive, by imagewise exposure to a corona discharge using a mask or shaped electrode. The support may be conductive, e.g. metallic, or non-conductive. The softenable layer may be e.g. a rosin ester, alkyd resin, silicone or epoxy resin, polyolefin or polystyrene. The photo-conductive material may be inorganic, e.g. selenium, zinc oxide, or organic e.g. a dye pigment. Typical solvents are the vapours of chloroform, ethyl ether, xylene, dioxane, or benzene. The heating steps may be performed using a hot plate, heating coil or forced hot air, and the exposure to solvent vapours by holding the image plate above the liquid solvent in a graduated cylinder.
