Abstract
1,207,938. Thrust reversers. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 9 June, 1969, No. 29132/69. Heading B7G. A thrust reverser for a gas turbine engine comprises a plurality of angularly spaced apart thrust reverser flap members 25 movable between a thrust reversal position (indicated in broken outline) in which they block the fan duct and force the fan air to pass out through an apertured portion 22 of the outer casing 12 through guide vanes 24, and a forward thrust position in which they permit the fan air to flow through the fan duct and block the apertured portion 22. Each of the flap members 25 has a leading part 26 and a trailing part 27 which are pivotally connected at a hinge 30. The trailing edges of the parts 27 are mounted on pivots 31 carried by the downstream portion 21 of the outer casing 12, and the leading edges of the parts 26 are connected at pivots 32 to links 33 extending radially inwards from a sleeve member 34 through slots in beams 23 or between closely adjacent beams 23, which beams interconnect the upstream and downstream portions 20, 21 of the outer casing 12. The sleeve member 34 is movable axially of the outer casing 12 between forward thrust and thrust reversal positions (shown in full lines and broken lines, respectively) in which, respectively, the apertured portion 22 is closed and opened to the flow of fan air. The movement of the thrust reverser members 25 and the sleeve member 34 is effected simultaneously by means of hydraulic or pneumatic rams 35 (only one shown) connected to the links 33. The leading and trailing parts 26, 27 of the members 25 are parallelogrammatic in shape and are formed with steps so that overlapping of these parts occurs in the thrust reversal position to prevent the passage of fan air between the members 25. Passage of the fan air between the members 25 when in the forward thrust position is also prevented by overlap between adjacent leading and trailing parts 26, 27.
