Abstract
1,207,719. Upgrading hydrocarbons. MOBIL OIL CORP. 21 Oct., 1968 [6 March, 1968], No. 49883/68. Heading C5E. In a method of upgrading a hydrocarbon feed containing polycyclic aromatic compounds and N 2 and S compounds, to a material in the gasoline boiling range by a catalytic hydrogenation pretreating stage followed by a catalytic hydrocracking stage, the severity of both steps is controlled in response to the concentration of polycyclic aromatic compounds in (a), the feed to the pretreating stage, and/or (b) the effluent passed from that stage to the hydrocracking stage, and/or (c) a recycle hydrocarbon stream to the second stage. The concentration may be measured continuously or intermittently by visible and U.V. absorption spectroscopy, or by gradient elution chromatography, mass spectrometry, I.F. absorption spectroscopy, gas-liquid chromatography, or magnetic resonance, andprocess variables controlled may be space velocity, H 2 circulation, temperature, or the amount of condensed-ring polycyclic aromatics in the feed to the first stage, see Fig. 1 (not shown). The process is applicable to distillates having a B.R. of 400‹ to 1100‹ F. or residuals free of ash and asphaltic constituents, examples being given. The pretreating step may be carried out at 600‹ to 900‹ F., a hydrogen partial pressure of 1000 to 3500 p.s.i.g. LHSV of 0À2 to 5 v./v./hr., and a H 2 circulation rate of 1000 to 20,000 SCF/B. Corresponding values for the hydrocracking stage are: 450‹ to 900‹ F., 500 to 3000 p.s.i.g., 0À1 to 10 v./v./hr., and 1000 to 20,000 SGF/B. There may be two or more hydrocracking stages, and it is stated that the pretreating and hydrocracking steps may be conducted together in a single stage. Many examples of catalysts for both stages are given.
