Abstract

1,207,704. Separating gas mixtures. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 11 Jan., 1968, No. 1604/68. Heading B1L. Gas mixtures are introduced by pipe 6 to component 2, which is separated from liquidfilled compartment 4 by porous barrier 3. Depending upon the nature of the barrier and of the liquid, which is generally aqueous, the effluent passing out through 5 is selectively enriched. Barrier 3 comprises an intimate formed mixture of (a) a substance which is not wetted by the selected liquid, e.g. a particulate hydrophobic polymer, suitably polytetrafluore'thylene, or waterproofed asbestos, and (b) a substance which is wetted, e.g. carbon, ceramic, alumina, charred wood, paper, shredded wood, plant fibres, or mixtures thereof. Suitable liquids comprise solutions of acids, bases, salts and amino acids. The barrier may also include particulate noble or transition metal, and is suitably formed on a wire screen. The application of an electric potential through the barrier is thereby facilitated and this may assist the desired separation. Barriers of polytetrafluorethylene and carbon impregnated with platinum and iridium are used in conjunction with sulphuric and phosphoric acid solutions to enrich streams comprising various hydrogen-containing mixtures.
