Abstract

1,207,538. Making graphite alloys; coating graphite powder with metal. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. Oct.2, 1967 [Oct.7, 1966; May 25, 1967], No.44789/67. Headings C7D and C7F. A process for the production of graphitic alloys comprises the steps of dispersing metal coated graphite particles in a metallic melt in which graphite is normally metallurgically incompatible, using a gaseous dispersing agent, and then cooling the melt to solidify it. The matrix metal may be Al, Mg, Zn or Cu or alloys based on these metals or on Pb or Sn. The particles may be entrained in an inert gas (e.g. Nz, Ar or He) which is preferably introduced into the bottom third or fifth of the melt, a pressure of 2-5 p.s.i. being suitable If oxidizing or chlorinating gases are used the recovery of graphite is reduced. Alternatively loose powder may be encapsulated with an agent which forms a gas at the melt temperature so that the capsule is destroyed and the particles dispersed. The graphite particles may be coated with Ni, Cu, Co, Fe, Al, Zn or alloys of these and the coating may be applied by conventional methods such as vapour deposition or chemical methods (e.g. decomposition of nickel carbonyl).
