Abstract
1,207,481. Optical measuring instruments. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. Nov.20, 1967 [Aug.22, 1966], No.37497/66. Heading G2J. An optical measuring instrument for the transverse gauging of elongated material e.g. wires or threads, includes means for producing two overlapping images of a transverse section of the material, and means for measuring the width of the overlap. As shown in Fig.1, a wire 11 is illuminated by a source 13 and light from an objective 15 is split by a half silvered mirror 17, the reflected and transmitted beams being further reflected by by mirrors 19, 21 respectively, the beams being combined at mirror 23 and focused by a lens 25 on a detector 27. Rectangular glass blocks 29, 35, in the respective light paths are rotated in opposite senses about a horizontal axis, by knob 31 on vernier 33 and through gearing 37 respectively, to displace the images of wire 11 at detector 27, the images overlapping and the width overlap being measured by the detector. The split image may be produced by rotating mirrors 21, 23 in one sense about axis 39 and by rotating mirrors 17, 19 in the opposite sense.
