Abstract

1,207,206. Fractional distillation, multi-stage. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 29 April, 1968 [3 May,. 1967], No. .20277/68. Heading B1B. [Also in Division C5] A liquid mixture is separated by fractional distillation by introducing it through pipe 11 into a column 1 which is connected to a secondary column 2, the latter being operated under sub-atmospheric pressure by an injector 4 actuated by part of the distillate from the main column 1, and the liquid leaving the injector being introduced through pipe 18 into column 1. The distillate from column 1 is collected in receiver 3, and part of it is pumped through pipe 16 and cooler 6 to injector 4. Another part of the distillate is pumped through pipe 17 to the head of column 1 as reflux. A sidestream 13,. withdrawn from column 1, is introduced into column 2. The highest boiling fraction of the product is withdrawn from the base of column 1, an intermediate fraction is withdrawn from the base of column 2, and the lowest boiling fraction is withdrawn through pipe 21. The separation of a mixture of benzene, toluene, and xylene is exemplified.
