Turning crank-pins and shafts.-Fig. 3 shows part of a lathe for turning crank-shafts in which a barrel a bolted to the face-plate b is carried in adjustable bearings a<2> mounted in standards a<3> secured to the bed or framing. The barrel is capable of containing a half of the crank-shaft. The tool is carried in a cross-slide mounted on a traversing saddle of ordinary construction, and the outer end of the shaft is supported by the tailstock in the usual way. Chucks.-Fig. 4 shows a device for holding the crank-shaft while the crank-pins d' are being turned. To the end of the barrel a is bolted a casting c having a semi-circular recess to receive a journal d so that the axis of the pin is coincident with the axis of the lathe. The shaft is secured in this recess by a plate e having a V- shaped recess to fit over the shaft and projections e<3> to fit a crank-web cl2 by which the. shaft is driven. The plate e fits an opening in the casting c and is secured to it by bolts e<2>. Means may be provided by which crank-pins of different throw can be turned, and similar chuck-devices are provided by which the shaft can be positioned while the ends of the crank-webs are turned.
