Abstract
1,206,116. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 3 Nov., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966], No. 50759/66. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises a cluster of fuel pins spaced and transversely located by transverse grids within an outer support sleeve, one of the grids being a support grid for supporting the fuel pins axially and being fabricated from a plurality of generally radical structural members attached to an outer support ring, a cellular structure for locating the ends of the fuel pins, comprising fuel pin cells joined by webs, being secured to and within the depth of the structural members. The support grid, shown in Fig. 3, has an outer support ring 5 which is held in engagement with a shoulder at the lower end of the outer graphite sleeve 1 by an inner sleeve 7 screwed at its lower end to the sleeve 1. The main structural members 19 of the support grid are joined by welding to the ring 5 and to a central ring 18. Fuel pin cells 20 are formed from bent strip material, edge on to coolant flow and thinner than the members 19, and spotwelded together and to the members 19 in a manner such that the latter divide the grid structure into units of equal numbers of cells. The width of the walls of the cells 20 is either equal to or less than the width of the members 19. The grid is prevented from rotating by engagement of three equi-spaced lugs 21 on the ring 5 in recesses 22 in the above-mentioned shoulder of the sleeve 1. A tube which extends the length of the element and which is carried by a ferrule secured within the ring 18 forms a guide for a fuel element lifting rod. Each fuel pin 35 (Fig. 4) comprises a stainless steel sheath 36 provided with circumferential or helical ribs and containing a stack of ceramic fuel (e.g. UO 2 ) dished-ended pellets 38. An insulating disc 39 at each end of the stack separates the pellets 38 from direct engagement with end caps 40 welded to the sheath. At the lower end of each fuel pin 35, a ferrule 41 is butt fusion welded at 42 to the respective end cap 40 and sheath 36, this serving for sealing of the end cap/sheath interface in addition to a seam weld 43. When positioned in the respective cell 20 of the grid, a shoulder 44 on the sheath 36 engages the top edge of the cell 20 and the lower end of the ferrule 41 is bent outwardly to engage the lower edge of the cell 20. The sleeve 1 has an outwardly chamfered spigot of reduced diameter at its lower end and an annular recess at its upper end with which the spigot of an adjacent fuel element can engage.
