Abstract
1,206,031. Aerating liquid. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORP. 12 Jan., 1968, No. 1992/ 68. Heading B1C. A method of producing uniform gas bubbles of microscopic size (i.e. up to 10 microns) in a liquid comprises supplying the gas to a porous layer 10' having outlets 20 of smaller diameter than the desired bubbles, and establishing over it a flow of liquid at a sufficiently high velocity to create a turbulent boundary layer 14 having a laminar sub-layer 13 adjoining the surface and having a thickness less than 10 microns, whereby the bubbles are detached from the surface when they begin to be large enough to project into the turbulent layer. An apparatus comprises a cylindrical hollow sparger 35 within a coaxial housing 34, forming between them an annular passage for liquid which tapers outwardly in the downstream direction. There are longitudinal guide vanes 45 in the passage. The sparger can be axially adjusted by a hand wheel 42 so that its conical tail 36 forms with the convergant housing wall 34a a flow restrictor 51 which can be adjusted to secure the desired liquid flow rate.
