Abstract

1,205,807. Boring earth &c. S. L. BASS. 13 Oct., 1967, No. 46841/67. Heading E1F. A stabilizer for use during drilling comprises a body 21, to fit between pipe lengths, and carrying helical ribs 9.. 11 each being a cylindrical working surface, concentric with body 21, and a leading end tapering from the working surface to the inner surface adjacent the body. The trailing end may be similarly tapered and the working surface, the leading end and part of the side which leads in the direction of rotation during drilling are protected with a layer of hard metal. Two to four ribs may be used. The ribs are applied by heating the body to between 750 and 1000‹F, welding the ribs thereto, raising the body temperature to between 950 and 1050‹F and finally allowing it to cool slowly to ambient temperature.
