Abstract
1,205,770. Body implants. NATIONAL PATENT DEVELOPMENT CORP. 26 July, 1967 [26 July, 1966; 5 July, 1967], No. 14454/ 70. Divided out of 1205764. Heading A5R. Body implants are formed wholly or partly from a polymer of a water-soluble monoester of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid having at least one hydrophilic functional group in its alcohol moiety. The polymer is preferably poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) or a copolymer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or butylene glycol dimethacrylate. Specified implants are arterial, venous or other vessel (e.g. urinary tract) substitutes, which can be made isotonic with the surrounding tissue by steeping in physiological saline solution and which can have an anticoagulant such as heparin incorporated therein; contraceptive devices such as intrauterine implants and diaphragms; and heart valve members and catheters. Medicaments such as antibiotics, steroids, bactericides, antivirals and fungicides can be incorporated in the implants. When the implant is a vessel substitute it can be reinforced with woven fibres or synthetic fibres. Where rigidity is desired, e.g. in contraceptive devices, a filler may be included in the polymer material, e.g. barium sulphate, calcium carbonate or clay. The implants can be based on a different plastics material, e.g. nylon or polyethylene, which is then coated with the polymer of the water-soluble ester.
